No sooner had we finished January’s Make, Do and Mend Skills Sharing Session than we were on to planning February’s! Five fantastic volunteers brought their considerable skills to the session on 20th February and shared them brilliantly with 10 members of the community who came to learn new skills from their neighbours and have fun in the process.
Attendees tried their hand at visible mending and the Japanese art of Sashiko as well as having a lesson in the do’s and don’ts of sewing machine maintenance and operation. We even had a corner of the space set up as a dressing room where participants could be dressed using a holiday scarf to make a top or a jacket. Comments in the project book included ‘I achieved something I don’t usually have success at’, ‘had and amazing time’ and ‘A really enjoyable evening’, ‘loved the Sashiko stitching and the scarf ingenuity!’. The next Make, Do and Mend skills share session will be on 20th March and will feature volunteers Linda and Hazel sharing their skills on fermenting with their favourite veggies. Come and have a go and take a special something away with you to enjoy at home.
Resources referred to within the session include:
Other Creative Agent projects are starting to take shape with the ‘Plant a Shoe’ initiative being rolled out at our next Share and Repair Café on 8th March from 10am – 1pm. You are welcome to bring an old pair of shoes or boots with you to plant up on the day or we can supply you with some. Once planted you can take them home and put them by your front door – remembering to water them regularly – they will bloom beautifully during the Crich and Fritchley Open Gardens season (June and July).
On the 8th of March you can also ‘Paint a Stone’ adding your decorated stone to others to make one big, brilliant caterpillar by the end of the day.
Also starting in March is the inter-generational project with Crich Luncheon Club and Crich Junior School. On 19th March the children from the school will come to the Glebe and learn decorative visible mending techniques from artist Lise Bennett alongside the members of Crich Luncheon Club. Hopefully a coat pocket or a holey glove or two might get mended before being put away for the winter!
Watch out for the call out for our ‘Love it Again’ sustainable fashion show as we need you! Expressions of interest from members of the community are requested in all aspects of sustainable fashion including upcycled, mended, homemade, embellished, vintage/inherited or favourite charity shop finds.
Send us an email to transitioncrich@gmail.com or message us on FB or Instagram with your idea for an outfit and we will count you in for our community catwalk on 9th May which is taking place at the Crich Glebe Community Centre (tickets available soon).
Keep creating!
