Neighbourhood Creative Agent Update

April 2025

By Clare Limb

During March we held our first Share and Repair Café of 2025. Creative Agent Clare worked with the Crich and Fritchley Open Gardens group to bring the ‘Plant a Shoe’ idea to life at the event. People brought along their own shoes, boots and wellies and planted them with plug plants and nasturtium seeds, ready to take home and nurture until its time to put them out at the front of their houses for the Open Gardens weekends (28th June and 26th July).

If you fancy having a go at this, we are holding another session with the open gardens group on 17th April from 7 – 9pm at the Glebe as part of our next Make, Do and Mend skills share session, please BYOB (Bring Your Own Boot).

Also, at the March Share and Repair Café, people had the opportunity to take part in community bunting making or paint a stone as part of a remake of Colin the Caterpillar from Crich (who is making a return appearance from when he was created during lockdown). Look out for colourful Colin on your travels around the village in the next few months!

On 19th March we held our first session of our ‘Make Something Special in Spring’ project with Crich Junior School and Crich Luncheon Club. Children from year 6 came to the Luncheon Club and spent the morning making wire and paper flowers together with the members, whilst talking to each other about what they make, do and mend. The Glebe was buzzing with chatter and creativity and as a result 60 beautiful flowers were made throughout the morning. These flowers will be exhibited in a special Art Share on Saturday 17th May as part of the next Share and Repair Café.

The next evening, we held our third Make, Do and Mend session at the Glebe, this time with a focus on all things fermentation! Linda and Hazel expertly led an activity on Sauerkraut making, where everyone chopped and chatted and then massaged their veggies before finally filling their jars ready for fermenting over the next few weeks. Gid delighted us with a talk on how to make Kombucha which included the chance to look at and smell a Scoby starter and Jennie chatted through her experiences of making fermented bread with her 10-year-old sourdough starter.

We have lots of opportunities for people to get involved with creative activities over the coming months, including a ‘Capturing Natural Wonders’ photography competition which launches on 1st April and the next Make, Do and Mend session on Thursday 17th April, dedicated to all thing sowing, growing, farming and foraging. Come along and join in the fun and learn about how to ‘Empower Your Plate’ in the process.

And finally, don’t forget to get your tickets for Crich’s first ever sustainable fashion show. ‘Love it Again Fashion Show’ is taking place on 9th May at the Crich Glebe Community Centre.

Featuring message spreading clothing collection from New Mills Fashion Week Activitstas as well as upcycled, pre-loved, handmade and mended garments modelled by local people on the Community Catwalk. The event finishes off with creative solutions and inspirational pieces to beat fast fashion trends.
